Teaching Abstinence

Posted by bounddragon on 17th October 2007

The debate on whether schools should teach abstinence or not is an ongoing one.  Conservatives say yes, liberals say no.  The issue is making headlines again, as a Portland, Maine school is wanting to hand out contraceptives to 11-year-olds without parental consent.  Lew Rockwell had this to say:

“This morning on FOX, I heard a debate between an advocate of abstinence and an advocate of non-abstinence. They were arguing over a Portland, Maine, public middle-school’s plan to hand out contraceptives to children as young as 11 without parental permission.

“The abstinence-guy thought that schools should make up for bad parenting by teaching abstinence. The non-abstinence woman said the contraceptives were needed to prevent pregnancy and disease.

“Neither of these people, nor FOX, saw anything wrong with government schools’ exercising a parental function–they just differed on what it should be.

“What I want to know is this: why would any parent allow their child to be indoctrinated by a totalitarian institution like the public school, in any subject?”

And so, it seems that even we conservative Christians are missing the boat.  The real question is not should they teach abstinence to our children, the real question is should they teach our children?

Deu 4:10  “…that [the people] may teach their children so…”

Deu 6:7  “…you shall teach them diligently to your children…”

Deu 11:19  “You shall teach them to your children…”

Psa 78:5  “…which He commanded our fathers to teach their children.”

Song 8:2  “…the house of my mother — she who used to teach me.”

God has ordained the family to teach his children, never a “totalitarian institution like the public school” to do so.  Ask the right question, be a part of the Exodus, provide your children with a Christian education.
