Teaching Abstinence

Posted by bounddragon on 17th October 2007

The debate on whether schools should teach abstinence or not is an ongoing one.  Conservatives say yes, liberals say no.  The issue is making headlines again, as a Portland, Maine school is wanting to hand out contraceptives to 11-year-olds without parental consent.  Lew Rockwell had this to say:

“This morning on FOX, I heard a debate between an advocate of abstinence and an advocate of non-abstinence. They were arguing over a Portland, Maine, public middle-school’s plan to hand out contraceptives to children as young as 11 without parental permission.

“The abstinence-guy thought that schools should make up for bad parenting by teaching abstinence. The non-abstinence woman said the contraceptives were needed to prevent pregnancy and disease.

“Neither of these people, nor FOX, saw anything wrong with government schools’ exercising a parental function–they just differed on what it should be.

“What I want to know is this: why would any parent allow their child to be indoctrinated by a totalitarian institution like the public school, in any subject?”

And so, it seems that even we conservative Christians are missing the boat.  The real question is not should they teach abstinence to our children, the real question is should they teach our children?

Deu 4:10  “…that [the people] may teach their children so…”

Deu 6:7  “…you shall teach them diligently to your children…”

Deu 11:19  “You shall teach them to your children…”

Psa 78:5  “…which He commanded our fathers to teach their children.”

Song 8:2  “…the house of my mother — she who used to teach me.”

God has ordained the family to teach his children, never a “totalitarian institution like the public school” to do so.  Ask the right question, be a part of the Exodus, provide your children with a Christian education.

Rummaging for Rights

Posted by bounddragon on 13th October 2007

“The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the Divinity Himself, and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.” Alexander Hamilton

This is an important quote because it recognizes our rights come from God Himself, not from the Constitution, nor the Government, nor the will of the masses. If these rights come from God, then they are given to ALL men, not just those who are citizens of America, under the jurisdiction of our Constitution, subjects of our Government, or members of the mass of American voters. Thus, detainees in Guantamo Bay have rights, the citizens of Iraq have rights, unborn children in their mother’s womb have rights, all men have rights.

The U.S. Constitution merely enumerates the God-given rights of man, those seen written in the whole volume of human nature, those found on the pages of Holy Writ, it does not bestow them.

Modern Day Parables

Posted by bounddragon on 9th October 2007

I think this is an absolutely phenomenal idea! I had discussed something like this in the past, maybe assigning parables to teams of youths and ask them to write a script and film short movies based on the assigned parable. I thought it would be great experience for the teens and a wonderful way to teach parables to others. Not to mention, this all would have been loads of fun!

Well, my idea remained nothing more than an idea. And, while these aren’t made by teens in some church youth group, they are modern tellings of Biblical parables. And they look like they’ll be good!
